Notice to the Consumer: BAO Registrar orders town to cease its cemetery services and sales

Update – Feb. 1, 2023: Registrar rescinds cease order
The Township of Alfred and Plantagenet is now in compliance with the law (FBCSA) and regulations. The cease order has been rescinded.

The Registrar, Funeral, Burial and Cremation Services Act, 2002 (FBCSA), has ordered the Township of Alfred and Plantagenet to immediately cease its licensed services as under the FBCSA.

The township, located 63 kilometres east of Ottawa, has failed to meet its annual reporting requirements despite repeated inquiries from the Bereavement Authority of Ontario (BAO).

As operator of the Chesser-Hagar Cemetery and the George’s Lake United Church Cemetery, it is the sole responsibility of the township to complete its reporting obligations each and every year.

To date, the following information remains outstanding:

  • Annual Licensure Report Form 1 for the year 2022
  • Report on Care and Maintenance Form for the year 2022
  • Justification for any costs paid by the Board/Township that are significantly above what is reasonably expected for similar services

This order will remain in place until the township has satisfied the Registrar that it is in full compliance with the FBCSA. This includes providing proof of the requested documents.
