- The BAO is all about consumer protection and ensuring people get value for their money. Read About the BAO.
- The BAO is a not-for-profit organization that is committed to protecting the public interest in the bereavement sector across Ontario.
- The BAO regulates and supports licensed: funeral establishment operators, directors and preplanners; cemetery, crematorium and alternative disposition operators; transfer service operators; and bereavement sector sales representatives across Ontario.
- The BAO was established in 2016, after the amalgamation of the Board of Funeral Services (BOFS) and the Cemeteries Regulation Unit (CRU).
- The BAO administers provisions of the Funeral, Burial and Cremation Services Act, 2002, (FBCSA) on behalf of the Ministry of Government and Consumer Services.
- The BAO educates Ontario consumers (families) on the bereavement sector (funeral, burial/cemetery, cremation and alternative disposition).
- The BAO is governed by a 10-member Board of Directors.
- The BAO is lead by a CEO/Registrar of the FBCSA, who carries out the powers and duties as set out in the law and its regulations.
- The BAO is wholly funded by licensee fees (not tax dollars). Licensee fees include new registrations and registration renewals.
