Selection Process

A Governance and Nominations Committee, comprised of members of the BAO Board, will review the applications. The most qualified candidates who best meet the criteria outlined in the Terms of Reference will be recommended for appointment. Nominee phone interviews may be conducted.

Compensation

Members of the Advisory Committees are volunteers. While the BAO does not pay Committee members a per diem, it does reimburse for travel and out-of-pocket expenses associated with attendance at meetings or special functions in accordance with the BAO Expense Policy. BAO Board members are paid in accordance with the BAO Remuneration Policy.

The BAO Board of Directors works with the CEO & Registrar toward fulfilling the mission, goals and objectives of Ontario’s sole bereavement sector regulator.

Opportunities:

  • There are no board vacancies at this time.

The BAO is governed by a 10-member board of directors, comprised of: 

  • Four (4) Elected Directors (ED) who are individuals selected based on their skills and governance experience. These individuals can have no direct interest in the bereavement sector; 
  • Three (3) Appointed Directors who are individuals selected and appointed by the Minister of Public and Business Service Delivery (A-MPBSD); 
  • Three (3) Appointed Advisory Committee (A-AC) Directors (industry representatives) who are also the chairs of the three (3) Advisory Committees.

Cemetery, Crematorium and Municipal Advisory Committee

Cemetery, Crematorium and Municipal Advisory Committee

This Committee is comprised of sector and consumer representatives, who provide the BAO Board and the CEO & Registrar with expert advice related to cemeteries and crematoriums.

Opportunities:

  • 1 Consumer Representative (2 or 3-year term)
  • 3 Cemetery Operator (2-3-year term)

Faith-based Advisory Committee

Faith-based Advisory Committee

This committee will provide advice to the CEO & Registrar and the BAO Board of Directors on issues of faith as they relate to funeral and transfer services, cemeteries and crematoriums, or alternative dispositions in Ontario.

Opportunities:

  • 1 Hindu Representative (2 or 3-year term)
  • 1 Sikh Representative (2 or 3-year term)
  • 1 Presbyterian Representative (2 or 3-year term)
  • 1 United Representative (2 or 3-year term)

Funeral and Transfer Service Advisory Committee

This Committee is comprised of sector and consumer representatives, who provide the BAO Board and the CEO & Registrar with expert advice related to funeral and transfer services.

Opportunities:

  • 1 Funeral Director – Small Population (2 or 3-year term)
  • 1 Funeral Director – Medium Population (2 or 3-year term)
  • 1 Funeral Director – Large Population (2 or 3-year term)
  • 1 Transfer Service Operator (2 or 3-year term)

Compensation Fund Committee

This Committee is responsible for managing the affairs of the Funeral Services Compensation Fund including determining eligibility of claims.
