
Registrar orders cemetery in Bright to cease selling and offering to sell licensed supplies and/or services
The Registrar, of the Funeral, Burial and Cremation Services Act, 2002 (the Act), has ordered the operator of Chesterfield Cemetery, in Bright, to immediately cease selling or offering to sell interment rights, and licensed supplies and/or services as defined in the Act.
The order includes offering and arranging for any pre-need or at-need licensed supplies and services that were not contracted for on or before the date of the Cease Order issued to cemetery, 37 kilometres southwest of Kitchener. An exception to the order will be made for at-need interment services that are requested by existing interment right holders only.
The Cease Order was issued on August 26, 2025, following cemetery’s failure to meet its annual reporting obligations.
About the BAO
The Bereavement Authority of Ontario (BAO) is a government delegated authority and not-for-profit corporation administering provisions of the Funeral, Burial and Cremation Services Act, 2002 (FBCSA). Accountable to the Minister of Public and Business Service Delivery and Procurement and the government, the BAO is responsible for the protection of the public interest. The BAO regulates, ensures compliance with the law, provides resources and services to licensed:
- Funeral establishment operators, directors and preplanners;
- Cemetery, crematorium and alternative disposition operators;
- Transfer service operators; and
- Bereavement sector sales representatives across Ontario.
The BAO is wholly funded by licensee fees (not tax dollars).
