Joining BAO committees provides valuable leadership experience

The Bereavement Authority of Ontario (BAO) is seeking qualified applicants for its Funeral and Transfer Services Advisory Committee, Compensation Fund, Discipline, and Appeals committees.

These committee roles offer a significant opportunity for you to contribute to consumer protection, regulatory oversight and public interest outcomes. As a committee member, the BAO will benefit from your insights, and you will obtain valuable governance and leadership experience. BAO Board of Directors and other committee positions are also available, as previously announced

Funeral and Transfer Services Advisory Committee – 3 opportunities
The BAO has three, volunteer Advisory Committees (AC) that support the BAO Board of Directors, as outlined in their terms of reference. The Funeral and Transfer Services Advisory Committee provides expert advice to the BAO Board and the Registrar on issues in the bereavement sector. AC chairs also serve as Directors on the BAO Board, offering a potential path to broader governance leadership.

Compensation Fund Committee – 2 opportunities
The Compensation Fund Committee’s mandate is to manage the affairs of the Funeral Services Compensation Fund to ensure compliance with the Funeral, Burial and Cremation Services Act, 2002 (the Act) and its regulations, and to determine eligibility of claims. The purpose of the fund is to compensate people who have suffered a financial loss due to a licensee’s failure to comply with the Act, regulations, or with the terms of an agreement made under the Act. The BAO is currently seeking two consumer representatives to play a critical role in the functioning of the Committee.

Discipline Committee – 12 opportunities
As per the Act, the Discipline Committee is responsible for hearing and determining issues regarding alleged licensee violations of the Code of Ethics, including penalties where appropriate. This is a meaningful opportunity to contribute to consumer protection across the province. The BAO currently seeks 12 members to serve on this committee.

Appeals Committee – 12 opportunities
The Appeal Committee’s role is to maintain confidence, transparency and accountability in Ontario’s bereavement sector. The mandate of the committee is to hear and determine licensee appeals of their discipline hearing, as per the Discipline and Appeal Committees Regulation, 0. Reg. 374/18, under the Act. The BAO currently seeks 12 members to serve on this committee.
